The Troubles And Tribulations Of The Hubble Telescope

Whilst researching one of my telescope reviews, I came across the Hubble Telescope. The Hubble Telescope is a telescope which was named after the astronomer Edwin Hubble who made one of the most significant scientific breakthroughs of the 20th century. After a number of decades of postponements and planning, the Space Shuttle finally brought the Hubble Telescope into space in 1990.

The Hubble Telescope has been responsible for many significant advancements in science and quite a few scientists who have worked on these projects have expressed that their findings and innovations would not have been feasible without its help. It's also likely that these findings have been an influence in the development of telescopes such as the Meade LX200.

The Hubble Telescope has had a troubled history including funding and setup problems.

The Hubble Telescope initially had a 1983 launch date which was delayed due to funding and budget complications, resourcing constraints and last but not least the Challenger tragedy which occurred in January, 1986. Funding for the Hubble Telescope was acquired in the early 1970's although the concept was developed decades earlier in 1946. The undertaking lost all of its funding in 1974, during the Ford presidency due to public spending cuts. Lobbying of congressman and senators by astronomers got the funding returned by congress in 1978, at half the original budget, due to a downsizing of the project's scale.

A condition with the main mirror was identified by scientists, which had been ground the wrong way, when the telescope was first launched in 1990, severely comprimising its capabilities. The capability for the Hubble Telescope to be serviced by astronauts in space was fortunately incorporated into its design, so the telescope's full capacities were restored in 1993 by a servicing mission. Seven astronauts carried out these repairs who had been trained in the use of the hundred or more specialist tools required. This mission occurred over a ten day period in December, 1993.

Between 1993 and 2002, four further missions upgraded, repaired and replaced telescope systems. A fifth mission was cancelled following the Columbia tragedy of February, 2003 but a final servicing mission was carried out in 2009.

The Hubble Telescope is positioned in such a way to ensure that it can orbit the Earth. This location is free of distortion of the Earth's atmosphere, enabling incredibly sharp images with virtually no background light to be captured. The Hubble Telescope is expected to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere after 2014 and three years after, its successor the James Webb Telescope is due to be launched into space. The James Webb telescope lacks the capacities of the Hubble Telescope, only observing infrared, so the Hubble Telescope will be sadly missed.
